About the Cundill History Prize

Cundill History Prize (McGill University), 2008-2025, one category labelled History. Year is the prize year the body uses (cundillprize.com/winners/<year>), i.e. the year announced and awarded. Levels: Winner; Finalist = every shortlisted non-winner, i.e. the two Recognition of Excellence runners-up plus the rest of any longer shortlist (2013-2015 shortlists of 6, 2018-2025 shortlists of 8, 2020 shortlist of 10); Longlist = longlisted but not shortlisted, where a longlist was published (2008-2012, 2016-2025; 2008-2012 and 2016-2017 went straight from longlist to three finalists). 2013 had no longlist; the two honourable mentions announced with the 2013 shortlist (Peter Brown, Yang Jisheng) are recorded as Longlist as the nearest lower tier. Winner and finalists cite cundillprize.com/winners/<year>; other tiers cite the body's announcement pages (McGill Newsroom for 2008-2016, cundillprize.com/news from 2017). Fallbacks: 2010 longlist from the archived McGill prize site (web.archive.org); 2011 longlist from a National Post article (no body page found); 2023 longlist page is now a 404 on cundillprize.com, so it cites the web.archive.org copy. Wikipedia's Cundill History Prize table was used to cross-check every year. Titles follow the body's pages (often UK edition titles); expected counts are the books on the longlist page (or the 2013-2015 shortlist page, which lists every book that year).
