Sources and verification
The catalog begins with primary records from each award organization and editorial recommendation provider. These links let readers verify the 14 award categories, NPR Books We Love recommendations, New York Times Ten Best selections, and the commercial-disclosure rules we follow.
First-party selection records
The archive spans adult fiction, translated fiction, general nonfiction, poetry, young people’s literature, speculative fiction, mystery, children’s literature, and picture-book illustration. Award records use the category and year assigned by each organization; NPR’s editorial recommendations use the year and categories in its own Books We Love guide.

The 10 Best Books of 2025 (opens in a new tab)
The most recent canonical annual page in the 2006–2025 Ten Best Books series; every catalog record links to its own year’s first-party page.
The Guardian, Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal may appear elsewhere as review or criticism links, but their annual editorial lists are not currently ingested as catalog selectors because production reuse requires an appropriate licensed feed or permission.
Selection year is not always publication year
Prize entries use the year assigned by the award organization; NPR entries use the year of the annual Books We Love guide. Either may differ from the book’s publication year.
We retain a separately verified publication year and edition record when available. This matters especially for translated works, U.K. and U.S. editions, and the Newbery and Caldecott medals, which recognize books from the preceding publication year.
Mapped sources awaiting commercial access
These publishers are part of the researched source plan, but their annual selections are deliberately not presented as ingested data until the appropriate commercial access and redistribution terms are in place. This avoids turning a consumer subscription or a technically scrapeable page into an assumed data license.
The complete year-by-year status is also available through the machine-readable provider coverage endpoint.
The Guardian
License requiredAnnual fiction and year-end roundups mapped for 2006–2025
A commercial Open Platform agreement is required before automated production ingestion.
Financial Times
License requiredCanonical annual or fiction-list pages mapped for 2007–2025; 2006 remains unresolved
FT content licensing must authorize historical extraction and public commercial metadata display.
The Wall Street Journal
License requiredCanonical annual pages verified for 2014–2015 and 2018–2025; older years remain fragmented
A Dow Jones license or expressly entitled Factiva feed is required for bulk production use.

How sources become entries
First-party records establish selection status, selector, credited creator or creators, and selection year. Publisher or library records may verify an edition’s ISBN, format, cover, publisher, translator, illustrator, and publication details.
Summaries and editorial notes are original writing. We attribute factual claims, avoid copying long passages, and separate selection facts from interpretation. Read the full editorial methodology.
Report a source or data error
Use the site’s published contact channel and include the affected page, disputed detail, and a reliable source. We compare the report with the primary record, correct confirmed errors, and note material changes on the affected page.
