About the National Translation Award

Every winning, shortlisted and longlisted book for ALTA's National Translation Award, listed once per category at its highest level. Year is the award year ALTA uses; books were published the year before. The award has been split into Poetry and Prose since 2015. Before 2015 it was one award, so 2006-2014 rows use the category Translation instead of guessing a genre. Only ALTA sources are used: the ALTA blog (literarytranslators.wordpress.com) for 2014-2024 longlist, shortlist and winner announcements, literarytranslators.org news posts for 2025, and the ALTA awards database for the 2006-2013 winners. 2006-2013 cover winners only; ALTA published no shortlists or longlists for them that we could find. 2014 covers the shortlist of five; its longlist is no longer online. Translators are credited in the translator field. Anthologies credit their editors as author. A few translator name typos in the blog posts follow the spelling in the ALTA awards database. ALTA's other prizes, such as the Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize and the Italian Prose in Translation Award, are left out.
