About the Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry

Winning and shortlisted books for the Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry, a ten-year Poetry Society award funded by Carol Ann Duffy's Poet Laureate honorarium; it ran for 2009-2018 only, so nothing exists for 2019 or 2020. Year is the Poetry Society's own label, the year of the work (e.g. the 2018 award went to work from 2018 and was presented in March 2019). The award covered work in any form, so this file keeps books only and expected counts exclude non-book works. Skipped as performances, radio or TV pieces, sound works, installations, exhibitions or a magazine poem: 2009: Jackie Kay (Maw Broon Monologues); 2010: Kaite O'Reilly (The Persians), Christopher Reid (Song of Lunch); 2011: Simon Armitage (Black Roses: The Killing of Sophie Lancaster), Julia Copus (Ghost Lines), Lavinia Greenlaw (Audio Obscura), Andrew Motion (Laurels and Donkeys), Christopher Reid (Airs and Ditties of No Man's Land); 2012: Kate Tempest (Brand New Ancients), Roy Fisher (Locklines), Mario Petrucci (Tales from the Bridge), Denise Riley (A Part Song), Tamar Yoseloff (Formerly); 2013: Maggie Sawkins (Zones of Avoidance), Hannah Silva (Total Man); 2014: Andrew Motion (Coming Home), Alice Oswald (Tithonus); 2015: Kate Clanchy (We Are Writing a Poem about Home); 2016: Salena Godden (LIVEwire); 2017: Jay Bernard (Surge: Side A), Greta Stoddart (Who's There?). As a result 2010-2014 and 2017 have no Winner row (those winners were non-book works); 2011 has a single book. Works shortlisted as a project with an accompanying published book are kept (Figura's Whistle, Bryce's Ballasting the Ark, McCabe's Pharmapoetica, Beckett's Sketches from the Poem Road); Crawford's Simonides is his translations with Norman McBeath's photographs. Official poetrysociety.org.uk pages refuse direct requests (HTTP 403), so every list comes from web.archive.org snapshots of the Poetry Society's own per-year pages.
