About the Vulture / New York Magazine Best Books of the Year
The New York magazine and Vulture book critic's year-end top ten, one combined list a year. 2006 is New York's unsigned Culture Awards top ten; 2007-2010 are Sam Anderson's (2009 a Vulture slideshow); 2012-2014 are Kathryn Schulz, 2015-2018 Christian Lorentzen, 2019-2020 Molly Young, 2021 Hillary Kelly, 2022 Vulture staff, 2023-2024 Maris Kreizman, 2025 Emma Alpern and Jasmine Vojdani. Lists are ranked except 2009 (an unranked slideshow) and 2025 (two critics' top-five lists, stored without rank). 2007 is Sam Anderson's ten numbered superlatives; slots 7 and 10 each name two books, so 2007 has 12 entries. 2008 slot 7 names three memoirs, so 2008 has 12 entries. The 2009 slideshow on vulture.com has lost its slide titles; its ten books were identified from the captions and image file names. 2011 is missing: New York's 2011 Year in Books ran only writers' picks, with no critic's list. Honorable mentions, other highlights, writers' and celebrity picks, gift guides, and genre lists (graphic novels, comics, art books, poetry) are left out. Vulture's 2019-2025 lists were built up through the year; the year-end versions are used. URLs were found through Exa search and yearendlists.com; all pages were read directly on nymag.com and vulture.com.
