About the Waterstones Book of the Year
Annual bookseller-nominated list, first run in 2012. Year is the year the shortlist and winner were announced (November-December). Category Book of the Year holds the shortlist with its winner. Extra book awards announced alongside it are separate one-winner categories: Children's Gift of the Year (2018, 2021), Children's Book of the Year (2022, 2024, 2025), Novel of the Year (2023) and Gift of the Year (2023, 2025). The 2019 and 2022 Author of the Year awards honor people and are skipped. waterstones.com blocks direct fetches, so citations are web.archive.org snapshots of official waterstones.com pages: blog shortlist posts (2012-2015) and the Book of the Year category page (2017-2025). Winners for 2013-2014 are cited to the 2017 category page's Previous Winners list. The 2016 shortlist falls back to Wikipedia because no archived Waterstones shortlist page loaded.
